Good internet memes help pass the time and make us laugh. However, when a meme involves making fun of people with conditions and disorders, a line has been crossed.
ABC News reports that AliceAnn Meyer fought back against the internet bullies who made an offensive meme mocking the condition of her 4-year-old son Jameson. The boy has a rare genetic condition called Pfeiffer syndrome which involves skull deformities, short thumbs, big toes and possible webbed hands and feet, according to FACES.
"It's basically making fun of the way he looks," Meyer told ABC News. "The first time I saw it I just kind of looked at it and said 'It's not even funny'." The 35-year-old mother cannot understand why people would waste their time creating a meme that would mock a person with a genetic disorder.
Although Jameson has the rare syndrome, he behaves and functions like a normal child. He communicates and expresses himself normally and he likes having fun and playing jokes around people.
Meyer decided to fight back against the bullies by reporting the offensive meme to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The social media sites removed the meme after receiving the report but it resurfaced in other sites later on.
This prompted the mother to write a blog post entitled "This Is My Son Jameson, And No, You May Not Use His Photo" on her blog site. "So, to everyone that 'LOL'd,' shared, and posted that meme, let me start by introducing you to the child you find so funny. His name is Jameson. He is very real, and he was born with Pfeiffer syndrome," the emotional mother wrote.
Many people, including parents, supported Meyer's decision to fight back against the internet bullies. She also promised to continue fighting if the meme would again go "live".
