Melissa McCarthy has finally spoken up to clear up any misunderstanding over "Gilmore Girls" and her return as Sookie St. James. In the weeks that succeeded Netflix' confirmation on hosting the "Gilmore Girls" revival, panicked "Gilmore Girls" fans wanted to know why Melissa McCarthy was not in the billing as Sookie St. James.
In a previous Parent Herald report, fans have actually petitioned Netflix through change.org. The petition called "Bring Melissa McCarthy Aka Sookie Back for Gilmore Girls Revival." Many supposed that McCarthy's having risen from the ranks and is now quite in demand has to do with her and Sookie St. James absence from "Gilmore Girls".
TV Line reported that "Gilmore Girls" creator Amy Sherman-Palladino would be happy to see McCarthy back on the "Gilmore Girls" set if she has some free time but that she realistically thinks it will not be for the full run. "But the thing I have said [to her team] is, 'Look, if Melissa is available and has an afternoon free, I'll write her a scene," Sherman-Palladino said. "Melissa was one of us. If she has a spare moment to run over [to the set] - even if for just a cameo - we would be totally game. And if it's a last-minute thing, I would write her in and we would figure it out. That's the way we left it."
Sherman-Palladino explained that their game plan is based on their estimate of how much time McCarthy can spend on "Gilmore Girls" vis-a-vis her other commitments. "It was a character we knew we could not count on in terms of story, because [Melissa] just simply wouldn't have that sort of time to carve out for us," Sherman-Palladino said. "It simply would've been impossible. Planning around her crazypants schedule and her movies and her this and her that and 'Ghostbusters'... I would just be sobbing in a corner for six months. That would be my whole life. But if her people called me up and said she's free on these particular days or would love to drop by and just be in one scene, we would put her right in."
UPI reports that McCarthy has actually written on her Twitter that neither word nor invite came to her and Sookie St. James returning to "Gilmore Girls".
"Thanks for the invite, but sadly no one asked me or Sookie to come back to Stars Hollow. Wish them all the best," McCarthy write in response to a fan's plea to see McCarthy and Sookie St. James in the new "Gilmore Girls".
With the final say actually out of McCarthy's hands, fans may still have hope that Amy Sherman-Palladino and her team could find a way to work Sookie St. James back in.
