'Star Trek Beyond' Release Date, Cast, News, Update: Chris Pine Says 'Star Trek' Is A Marriage, Simon Pegg's Co-Writer Doug Jung Intimidated

When Justin Lin took the directorial job for "Star Trek Beyond," long-time fans worried that the sequel will be "Star Trek" on steroids. After all, the "Star Trek Beyond" director is well-known for his impressive fast-action style in "Fast and Furious 6." Paramount's direction for "Star Trek Beyond" to have a bit more similarity to "Guardians of the Galaxy" did not help either.

However, "Star Trek Beyond" seems to have shaped up quite well, thanks to the very capable efforts of screenplay co-writers Simon Pegg and Doug Jung. Trek Core reports that, during an interview with Writer's Bone, Jung described the film's creative process.

"I was hesitant to take [the job] because, I mean, you'd have to be kind of an idiot to not see that opportunity - but it's a little intimidating," Jung related. "There's just a huge amount of information and so many years and layers that go into canon."

The actual writing the script for "Star Trek Beyond" definitely needed a fine-toothed combing of the "Star Trek" archives between Pegg and Jung. "There were definitely times when we were sitting there together and we would both be like, 'All right, this is just weird. We need to think of a really good Spock line' or whatever - a really good Bones quip," Jung continued. "We'd have some cool idea, but think, 'Did they do that once in some Next Generation episode? Is that what's coming to us? Is that where we're getting it?'"

Not only did Pegg and Jung receive a lot of help from Trekkies to supplement their own research, but their collaboration in itself was very productive. "What I liked about [Simon's] point of view is that he is an actor in the new reboot franchise, and he could kind of take a different point of view on it at certain times," Jung explained.

"That was really cool, because we would be doing scenes where there was heavy back-and-forth dialogue, and he could sometimes say, 'You know, I don't think he'd say that.'"

In the meantime, Just Jared reports that "Wonder Woman" actor Chris Pine, who plays Captain Kirk in "Star Trek Beyond," revealed during his interview with DuJour just how adventurous he is as an actor. "Anytime I get offered a chance to wear a wig, I will do it," Pine said in reference to his appearance in the Netflix series "Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp." "I really love doing comedy. It's just not a bad way to spend the day."

Pine also said that the "Star Trek Beyond" dynamics are better than ever. "It's gotten so much better and so much easier," Pine expressed. "This family we built has gotten tighter, stronger and stranger; we fight more and we make up more. It's a great marriage-we understand each other and what we all do best... And now that J.J. Abrams has left, the kids have taken over the asylum."

Chris Pine and the rest of the gang of "Star Trek Beyond" will be seen in theaters beginning July 22, 2016.
