It has been more than a decade now since mark Zuckerberg created Facebook. And today, the giant social media has currently 1.6 billion active users every month, which amounts to $3.5 trillion worth of misspent productivity that affects an individual's personal finance and a parent's time for their children.
In an article published by NBC News, they pointed out that Facebook earns about $3.73 in revenue for every person around the world subscribed to their platform. The market cap also suggests that since that report came out, it means that each Facebook user costs over $200 as their given value.
Zuckerberg's goal when he first built Facebook was to make people stay in touch with their loved ones, be it their family or friends. But clearly, it went beyond that since a lot of people get hooked on it that they are starting to lose track of time. The time that people spend using this social media is already at an alarming state because based on the company's 2012 IPO filing, they declared that their subscribers use their site for about 10.5 billion minutes a day.
If Facebook users are still spending the same amount of time they did back in 2012 today, it just shows that about 55 million years have already been spent by people simply by scrolling the site and engaging to its features like updating their statuses and liking posts. Imagine what you as an individual or as a parent could have already accomplished with those times you have spent instead of being on Facebook.
This is a wake-up call for everyone who wants to be productive and to those who wish to make their time here on earth worthwhile. Productivity is not the only problem that being addicted with social media could also bring. According to the Economic Times, matters involving health and relationship could also be the issues here when an individual is spending too much time on Facebook.
