Pregnancy Tips: How To Manage Third Trimester Symptoms

The third and last trimester of pregnancy is a difficult challenge for women because of the symptoms present during this period. However, knowing how to manage third-trimester symptoms can make a big difference in women's lives.

The PARENTING has compiled a list of these symptoms and how to deal with each. Knowing what to do with each symptom can help women feel more comfortable during this trimester and help them prepare physically and mentally for the coming childbirth.

First on the list is fatigue as caused by the weight gain and the strain that results from rearranged body organs. The best ways to deal with this symptom is by doing small amounts of physical exercise, taking short breaks when working, eating small but frequent meals and going to the doctor to check for anemia.

Next on the list is back pain -- caused by the growing belly and the production of a hormone called relaxin, which loosens the joints to prepare for delivery. To deal with this symptom, pregnant women are advised to do pelvic rocking while kneeling and keeping a straight back, using support garments for the belly, placing extra padding underneath the back when sleeping, getting a prenatal massage from a spa and avoiding to lift heavy things.

Frequent urination caused by the uterine pressure on the urinary bladder is also a third trimester symptom that women have to deal with. Baby Center advises women to avoid beverages like coffee and tea which have mild diuretic effects, lean forward when urinating to completely empty the urinary bladder and drink plenty of fluids during the day, and reduce the amount of fluid intake hours before bedtime.

Another symptom is heartburn, which is caused by the relaxation of hormones responsible for preventing acids from shooting back up to the esophagus, as well as the uterine pressure pushing the stomach upward the throat. Pregnant women are advised to stay away from foods that cause heartburn such as caffeine, highly-seasoned dishes, spicy and acidic meals, as well as greasy and fatty foods.

Lastly, women also have to know how to deal with third trimester symptoms such as edema and varicose veins. Edema involves the swelling of feet, ankles and legs caused by the retention of fluids in the lower part of the body while varicose veins involve painful bulges on the legs caused by weakened blood vessels. Putting the feet up often, proper amounts of rest from sitting and standing, avoiding crossing of legs, wearing support hose and avoiding stockings are some of the most effective ways to manage these symptoms.
