Fruit Consumption May Lower Risk of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

Consuming more fruits on a regular basis will not only improve health but will also lower risk of abdominal aortic aneurysm, a source told Medical News Today.

The results of the study which was published in the American Heart Association's journal of Circulation showed that participants who ate the most fruit and vegetable had a lower risk of developing aneurysm of up to 25% and 43% lowered risk of aneurysm that may rupture.

According to the report, 80,000 participants between the age of 46 and 84 were divided into four groups based on the amount of fruits and vegetables they consume on a daily basis.There was a 13-year follow-up study conducted by the same group of researchers.

The researchers found that high fruit eaters had a 31% lower risk of an aneurysm and a 39% lower risk of a ruptured one.

According to the Medical News Today report, the type of fruits that were included in the test were pears, apples, bananas, oranges and other citrus fruit variants.

Dr. Otto Stackelberg of the Karolinska Institute and head researcher of the study told the Medical News Today that abdominal aortic aneurysm is oftentimes asymptomatic and occurs in up to 4.5% of men 65 and above.

Dr. Otto further stated that among women within the same age range, about 1.3% are affected.
