American rapper, record producer and fashion designer Kanye West announced on Thursday, Feb. 11 that he would be releasing a video game called "Only One". The video game is about his late mother, Donda West, travelling to heaven.
Rolling Stone reported that the surprise announcement was made by Kanye during the premiere of his fashion line "Yeezy Season 3" at Madison Square Garden, wherein he also debuted his seventh album, The Life of Pablo. He revealed that the video game was named after a song on his album written about his daughter North West from his mother's perspective.
The rapper also shared a short trailer of the video game during the event. The short clip showed Donda ascending to the sky on a winged horse and was later floating through the clouds donning angel wings.
"The idea of the game is my mom traveling through the gates of heaven," Kanye told the crowd as reported by Kotaku. He added that the video game is meant to commemorate his late mother.
The surprise preview gained various reactions from the audience. "That's not easy to do, man!" Kanye said after he felt that the audience did not react appropriately to the video game teaser. "Y'all just be acting like that shit is regular."
"No, you don't understand," Kanye remarked as he replayed the short clip of the video game. "I go out to meet with everybody in San Fran, and they'll diss the f**k out of me. And I'll be like, 'I wanna make a game,' and they'll be like, 'f**k you.' That was hard to do, bro."
According to an article of the In Touch Weekly, Donda passed away tragically in 2007 at the age of 58. Her untimely death was due to plastic surgery complications from a routine liposuction, tummy tuck and breast augmentation. One of Kanye's many creative companies was named after her.
