A new study released on Feb. 16 stating that the number of fraternal twin births has doubled in the last ten years. If you're seeing more twins these days, then these are the reasons.
According to the data collected from this research that was published in the Population and Development Review, the rise of twin births started even back in the 70s. From 1975 to 2011, about 9.5 to 16.9 was the increase that occurred in the U.S.
Yahoo Parenting also reported this phenomenon explaining what exactly are fraternal twins and its difference from identical twins. The birth of fraternal twins happens when a couple of eggs is sent out and fertilized by two sperms that are different from each other.
In an article reported by The Atlantic, they wrote that the increase in twin births is more experienced in rich countries. They even coined the term "twincrease" with their report. But why exactly is this happening? Apparently, women who get pregnant in their older years are more likely to experience twin births. This explains why there are so many twin babies in England and Wales since most women there get pregnant in their late 30s.
Another reason for twin births is fertility treatments. Women who are taking the vitro fertilization treatment have a huge chance to have twin babies in their womb.
Although it could be great news for some family to have twins on the way, this kind of birth has also caused some major health issues -- making the doctors get more concerned about the matter. It is because premature birth, stillbirth and even a high rate of infant mortality could also be on the way.
Other problems that may occur in babies also include gestational diabetes, being underweight while mothers could experience postpartum depression.
