A 1-year old boy was shot and killed in Brooklyn as his father pushed him in a stroller across the street at 7:20 pm on Sunday night. Police officials believe the shots were intended for the father and are gang related.
Antiq Hennis, 16 months, was less than a block away from the family's home when shots rang out and the young boy sustained a bullet wound on the left side of his skull, according to the Associated Press. Hennis' father had just gone to pick him up at the mother's home so that he could bring him to his grandmother's.
The boy's grandmother said she was nearby and heard the shots as the boy's mom, Cherise Miller ran to get the boy's grandmother.
His father, Anthony Hennis, began screaming for help as soon as he saw that Antiq had been struck by one of four bullets fired in the family's direction. The father has a criminal record and police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said he was not cooperating with police in their investigation.
"Mr. Hennis has not been cooperative with us. He has not answered questions. We're still trying to, obviously, determine his contacts. He has an extensive arrest record, so we are looking into his relationships with other people," Kelly said, according to the report.
Law enforcement officials as well as several family members say that the bullet was likely intended for Anthony Hennis rather than his baby son.
Investigators found four. 45-caliber shell casings on the corner, and one fired bullet was found at 360 Bristol St., Kelly said. "The stroller had four bullet holes in it. It appears to be two entrance and two exit holes,"Kelly said.
Unfortunately, this 1-year-old boy was not the only child involved in a shooting incident in the city this summer. A 3-year-old boy was shot and wounded while sleeping in his Brooklyn apartment just a couple weeks ago. Antiq's is the 16th case of a child under 16 being shot in US streets since mid-May, according to NY Daily News.
The police are still investigating who is behind the shooting of the 1-year-old boy. No arrests have been made.
