Exercising During Pregnancy Helps A Lot In Preventing Gestational Hypertension

Scientists at the Ontario Western University reported on Feb. 19 their new findings about the benefits of physical exercises to pregnant women. Among these benefits involve keeping them in good shape that they won't have to suffer going obese, their babies would be of normal size and most importantly, it will keep them away from experiencing gestational hypertension.

New Medical reported that 765 random healthy pregnant women were used for this study. 382 of them were assigned to an exercise group while the other 383 just got some standard pre-natal care. The results came out stating that pregnant women who are not exercising are three times at risk in getting high blood pressure.

According to CTV News Atlantic, pregnant women, who are more active and into their regular exercise, are more likely to win against the risk of hypertension. They too would be able to fight against obesity and their babies are also safe from being overweight.

Fitness experts couldn't agree more on what these researchers found out and that they even recommend pregnant women to start having an exercise routine. But each pregnancy is different, so it is highly recommended to consult your gynecologist first before diving into any exercise, especially if they could be strenuous for your condition.

There are light physical exercises that pregnant women could still do that will surely help them combat hypertension. Physiotherapist and a certified Pilates instructor, Francesca Ambrocichukis shared her thoughts about this new study saying, "An exercise program can help a woman maintain and even build physical strength, core strength, cardiovascular endurance, body awareness to help her manage the changes and demands that pregnancy places on her body."

She also recommends for pregnant women to try doing pre-natal Pilates as it aims to strengthen the muscles of the parts that a woman needs during her pregnancy, labor and the delivery of the baby itself. This form of exercise would help in creating good posture as they go on with their daily activities.
