Neutering is a process of castrating or spaying animals which means removing the whole or a big part of their reproductive organ. Some states in the U.S. are even requiring all adopted dogs and cats to be neutered before the new owners bring them to their new home. This is to control the population of pets.

Neutering is a process that can be applied to both sexes but this is usually done in male dogs according to Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors for the purpose of removing or reducing unwanted sexual behaviors like aggression and preventing overpopulation

Advantages of neutering

1. In male dogs, the testosterone level lowers down when castrated and causes them to be less aggressive. In some cases, male dogs becomes more emotional and brittle.

2. It prevents your dog to roam anywhere to find a mate. This will reduce your dog's risk of getting injuries from dog fights and road accidents as explained by The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

3. Dogs that are castrated are trained better than those intact male dogs. This is because they are not easily distracted by pheromones coming from female dogs in heat near the area.

4. Lessens the risk of many medical conditions like dog hernias, Perianal tumors and prostate problems.

Disadvantages of Neutering

1. Your dog is more likely to become obese according to The Daily Puppy page. Neutering your dog changes their metabolism and they move less because they lack the hormonal drive.

2. Male dogs have a higher risk of getting hormone-responsive alopecia which is commonly known as hair loss.

3. Male dogs are getting twice the risk of getting osteosarcoma or known as bone cancer compared to those intact male dogs.

4. This increases the geriatric cognitive impairment of male dogs wherein they become disoriented and may show unusual behavior towards their owners or masters.
