The mother admitted that she was perplexed after doctors wrapped her newborn son in the sandwich bag. Nevertheless, she said she was thankful for the initiative as it saves her baby's life.
Tiny Isaac Derwent's mother, Jennifer, 37 years old, said she was 30 weeks pregnant when she was out shopping with her husband, Jonathan and felt that her stomach had a slight pain. However, she didn't mind it because she thought it was innocuous.
Nevertheless, Mr. Derwent, 38 years old, rushed Jennifer to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, Devon as he suspected that she is about to give birth to their second child. And her husband was indeed right! Their son was born 10 weeks early, weighing just 3lb 11oz. But both parents were shocked after doctors put the newborn baby into a plastic bag right after he was delivered. "The doctors said the idea behind that was to regulate his body temperature," Jennifer, a psychology teacher explained to Mirror.
She said the method was quite shocking for her -- seeing her baby wrapped in a plastic bag. But after she saw that it kept her son warm and helped him get better, she said she was thankful that she gave birth to the right place. After which, the medical facility moved the baby into an incubator. "We are very fortunate to have been at Derriford Hospital which is a center of excellence," Mrs. Derwent added.
"We can't fault the care we received," Jennifer said. "The hospital were fantastic with us." Now, the Derwents from Avonwick, Devon are raising money to help the medical facility who cared for them.
Likewise, Caroline Derwent, Jennifer's sister wants to help the medical team. Hence, she is planning to host on March 20 a marathon inking event at her tattoo shop to raise at least £2,000 to help the ward who saves Isaac's life.
