Actress Michelle Yeoh has opened up about her infertility struggles and reflected on her regrets about never being able to have children.
In an interview published by The Times on Sunday, the Malaysian actress, 62, said she always wanted to have a family. However, she discovered that she could not have a child after marrying her first husband, Dickson Poon, in 1988.
She and her husband sought fertility treatment in hopes of having kids but were unsuccessful.
"And I think the worst moment to go through is every month you feel like such a failure," she told the outlet. "And then you go, why? And I think at some point you stop blaming yourself. I go, there are certain things in your body that doesn't function in a certain way. That's how it is."
Biggest Sadness of Her Life
In the interview, Yeoh said not being able to have children is the "biggest sadness" of her life. That said, she noted that she does not live with any regrets, adding that she has given it her "110%."
Yeoh and Poon's marriage ended largely due to the actress' struggles with infertility. Their divorce was finalized in 1991. While the actress is now the godmother to Poon's daughter, she said it took her a long time to accept her infertility struggles and added that she sometimes still thinks about it.
The actress retired from acting when she and Poon were planning to have children but returned when she couldn't do so. She has since starred in iconic roles, including those in films like "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once."
She is set to play Madame Morrible in the upcoming film adaptation of Wicked.
Becoming a Grandmother
Yeoh is now married to Jean Todt, a French motor racing executive and former rally co-driver to whom she had been engaged for 19 years. He served as the chief executive officer of Ferrari from 2004 to 2008. He has since served as the FIA Honorary President since December 2021 and the UN Special Envoy for Road Safety.
Yeoh recently became a grandmother to the child of Todt's son, Nicolas, from a previous marriage. In an announcement on Instagram, the actress wrote that they feel "very, very blessed."
