In October, police officers found a 19-year-old Walmart employee dead in the bakery store's walk-in oven in Halifax, Canada. Now, authorities said there was no evidence of foul play.
Halifax Regional Police responded to a call of a sudden death in the Walmart store located at 6990 Mumford Road on the evening of Oct. 19. Investigators found the body of 19-year-old Gursimran Kaur inside a large walk-in oven in the store's bakery department.
Nearly a month after the incident, detectives for the Halifax Police Department said they have not found any evidence indicating the death was suspicious.
"There is no evidence of foul play," they said in a news release published Monday.
How Police Investigated the Kaur's Death
During the investigation into the 19-year-old's sudden death, Halifax police interviewed "several" people, reviewed video footage, and "worked very closely" with officials at the Nova Scotia Department of Labor and Medical Examiner Service. They later ruled that there was no one else involved in Kaur's death.
Police have already notified Kaur's family about their findings. They have also extended their condolences.
"Investigators met with family to share this update and extend condolences. Our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time," the news release read. "The family asks the public to respect their privacy and the dignity and memory of their loved one, as they receive this news."
It remains unclear how the 19-year-old ended up locked inside the oven. The police are expected to provide a final update on the case soon.
Who Was Gursimran Kaur?
Kaur is a member of the Maritime Sikh Society in Halifax and is an immigrant from India, according to PEOPLE magazine. She and her mother worked at the Walmart store for two years until the time of the incident.
Her mother said she was worried after she had not seen her daughter for about an hour on the evening of Oct. 19. She grew even more worried when she could not reach her daughter's phone.
Kaur's mother was the person who found her dead inside the locked oven. Audio of emergency officials revealed the oven's power was still on when they found the 19-year-old's body.
Her family has launched a GoFundMe campaign that raised nearly USD$140,000 (CAD$194,000). The campaign has stopped accepting new donations.
