Parents of students at two Delaware schools were outraged after they were notified of two incidents in which the school's cops accidentally fired their guns near students.
The first incident occurred on Nov. 7 at Stanton Middle School, when the school's officer discharged his firearm while "repositioning his holster," the school's principal said in an email. He added that students were in class at the time, and no one was injured, according to Delaware Online.
The most recent took place on Dec. 10 in the Milford School District, but the district's spokesperson refused to provide the name of the school, Delaware Online reported.
Milford School District posted about the accidental discharge on its Facebook page, writing that it took place "in a private staff workroom" by a district constable, which is a hybrid police officer and security guard who serves at schools and hospitals. The district also said no one was injured or threatened during the incident.
"This incident did not impact our instructional areas with access to staff and students; however, we feel a responsibility to be transparent with our school community. While we understand this is concerning, please be assured that our constable staff receive thorough on-going certification and training regularly," the post read.
They added that they are working with law enforcement to investigate the incident, then closed comments on the post.
While parents appreciated the transparency, they voiced their concern in other local groups.
"If the district wants to be transparent then tell us the school and what's going to be done about this mishandling of a firearm. Absolutely no excuse for this. Training is clearly lacking or they are getting super careless," Megan McCarthy commented in "Milford DE Locals Group," according to Delaware Online.
