A Polish man has been arrested after he killed an 18-year-old and raped her corpse. In an interview with police later, he admitted that the heinous act was decided through a coin toss.
Wiktoria Kozielska, 18, was returning home after attending a party in Katowice when Mateusz Hepa, 20, approached her. He lured the teen to his apartment where she fell asleep.
The teen was later brutally beaten and strangled to death with a rope. The suspect wrapped her body in plastic and contacted the authorities, according to the Daily Mail, citing the suspect's testimony in the court trial.
Suspect Used a Coin Toss
Following his capture, Hepa was interviewed by police where he said that a coin toss determined the fate of the 18-year-old. He also admitted to undressing the victim and raping her corpse.
"I tossed a coin, it landed on heads, so I killed her," he said, per NDTV. "If it had been tails she would probably still be alive."
When asked why he chose the girl as his victim, Hepa said he just "felt the need to kill." The suspect added that prior to meeting Kozielska, he had already been thinking about killing someone and spent some time walking around town looking for a victim. He met Kozielska on a bus and "gave her the choice" of either going home or following him.
Hepa further noted that he uses a coin when making difficult decisions, which led him to sitting on the victim's chest and strangling her to death.
Local media also reported that Hepa had thought of taking his own life after committing the crime but decided against it and instead called the police.
Investigators are currently running a toxicology test on Kozielska. The result is expected to be released within the next two weeks.
What Are the Charges Against Hepa?
The 20-year-old suspect has been in police custody since last year and facing charges of murder. The trial is scheduled for February 12 and could possibly face a life sentence. However, local paper Eska noted that Hepa could face a maximum of 25 years in prison as he is not yet 21, as translated via Google Translate.
