A French mother who has three children has had all four of her limbs amputated after medical experts were too slow to diagnose her infection after a routine operation.

The woman was identified as Priscilla Dray, who suffered from septic shock following an abortion at the Pellegrin University Hospital in Bordeaux in 2011. The mother said that she arrived at the hospital in "great shape" but was "left to die."

Dray argued that she suffered from an infection after doctors refused to give her antibiotics. A month after she got the abortion, the former shopkeeper suffered from necrosis and "was massacred" by having both of her legs, her right forearm, and her left hand amputated.

Following the incident, two hospital doctors appeared before the Bordeaux Criminal Court after they were indicted for involuntary injuries with incapacity. The development comes more than 13 years after Dray's life was changed forever. The courts are now trying to establish the responsibilities of each party that led to the mother's disfigurement, according to Dailymail.

The French woman now claims that her temperature rose to 39.6 degrees Celsius the day after she had undergone the routine operation. When she recorded this, she decided to go to the university hospital emergency room to get checked.

However, all that was done was medical personnel removed her intrauterine device (IUD) and took a swab before an intern supposedly concluded that Dray was most likely suffering from endometriosis. She then requested antibiotics, under advice, but was allegedly refused by the doctor on duty and simply sent back home.

Ignored by Medical Staff

The day after Dray was sent home, she went to her GP in Cap Ferret, who thought that she could have septicemia, forcing her to go back to the hospital. The GP then gave the French woman a note to give to doctors at the hospital, but it was allegedly not passed on by staff even as Dray struggled to breathe, Mirror reported.

Dray said in an interview that the sepsis with "flesh-eating bacteria" was eating into her limbs, which forced medical staff to amputate them. She argued that she trusted the professionals at the hospital, but they failed her.

There was a similar situation experienced by a 35-year-old pregnant mother who had four limbs amputated due to strep infection. Brie Morgan Bauer was 27 weeks pregnant in February 2024 when she felt her shoulders a little achy, suspecting that she had caught the flu her husband had a few weeks prior.

However, she learned that she was having contractions and that her baby was in distress, forcing doctors to perform an emergency cesarean section. Bauer reportedly started hemorrhaging and quickly lost blood pressure.

She was immediately intubated, placed on dialysis, and given various medications to treat an infection: streptococcal toxic shock syndrome from group A streptococcus, as per Yahoo News.
