A father and his stepson have been arrested after trying to kill a truck driver on Grand Parkway in what officials believe was part of a murder-for-hire plot.

The suspects have been booked into the Harris County Jail and are facing very serious charges following the crime they committed on Feb. 4, 2025. At the time, a man was driving his company truck along the Grand Parkway at Mason before getting shot multiple times and surviving.

Father and Stepson Carry Out Murder-For-Hire Plot

Officials initially believed that the incident appeared to have been a result of road rage, but that idea was quickly ruled out soon after. This was because it was revealed in court that the victim's work truck had cameras installed inside and outside that captured what happened.

The footage from these cameras, alongside the ones taken from other surveillance cameras, helped officials quickly narrow down the people responsible for the shooting. They later identified the perpetrators as the father, Ricardo Obandon, and his stepson, Matthew Rosas, according to ABC13.

During Obando's initial court appearance in front of a magistrate judge, he talked about his relationship with Rosas after the judge tried to put in a condition that he would not be allowed to contact his co-defendant in the case.

When the magistrate asked Obando if he understood the additional conditions that he was setting for the case, the defendant explained that Rosas was his son. After this, the magistrate judge removed the conditions that were supposed to bar the defendants from contacting each other.

Charged With Attempted Capital Murder

The two suspects are facing charges of attempted capital murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in relation to the supposed murder-for-hire plot. Investigators with the Harris County Sheriff's Office revealed that Rosas was the first to be arrested on Friday, and they later took Obandon in on Saturday, KHOU reported.

Court records showed that the two suspects surveilled the victim "more than one time" before shooting him. Rosas told investigators that his stepfather, Obandon, was hired to carry out the murder of the truck driver and was paid $300 to drive the getaway car.

Prosecutors revealed that Obando has a prior conviction for possession of a prohibited weapon as well as a criminal history, including forgery, assault, terroristic threats, and federal charges for drug distribution and firearm possession.

There was another case last year where a father and his stepson were arrested and charged after they beat a Clearwater teenager. The suspects were identified as 45-year-old Enrique Louis Sanchez and 25-year-old Bradley Michael Burroughs.

The incident happened on May 1, 2024, and started after the victim almost hit a gray Nissan SUV in the parking lot of a gas station at Fort Harrison and Chestnut Street. The suspects, who were riding the SUV, got angry and followed and harassed the teenager before assaulting him, as per Fox13 News.
