Texas officials charged a 17-year-old suspect with murder for the fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old during a track meet.

Authorities from the Frisco Police Department said in a news release that the suspect, identified as Karmelo Anthony, was arrested and held without bond. Several reports identified the teenager who died as Austin Metcalf, and a social media post claimed that there was already a sigil planned in his honor.

Police officials responded to David Kuykendall Stadium after receiving reports of a fight that broke out between two students at around 10:00 a.m. When they arrived, they found the 16-year-old suffering from stab wounds. He was quickly taken to a hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Law enforcement authorities revealed that an investigation into the case is currently active and ongoing to look into other details of the crime. Officials are encouraging anyone who has information about the fatal stabbing to come forward and assist with the case, according to CBS Austin.

A spokesperson for police officials said that Anthony was initially being held at the city jail but was to be transferred to Collin County jail at a later date. They added that they had no information regarding whether or not the suspect had an attorney yet.

Authorities tried to find contact information for family members to speak on Anthony's behalf but their efforts were not immediately successful. In a statement, the Frisco Independent School District said the stabbing occurred during a meet where student athletes from eight of the district's 12 schools competed against each other.

The victim was identified to be an 11th grader at Memorial High School as revealed by an email the principal of the school sent to parents on Wednesday. Officials did not immediately release details about what led to the fatal stabbing of the 16-year-old, the Associated Press reported.

The Frisco Police Department also noted that it was working with Frisco ISD and will provide any needed support during this "incredibly difficult time." The department said that it grieves with all the people affected by the horrific incident and extends its deepest condolences to the family of the victim.

On the other hand, Frisco ISD called the case an "unprecedented situation," adding that it shared the same grief of affected individuals. It was revealed that Memorial High School will acknowledge Metcalf's death during school on Thursday and provide support throughout the day, as per ABC News.
