Yet another reason to quit smoking, it will help you get a good night's sleep, a latest study suggests.
For decades, experts have listed various health benefits of quitting smoking. It is known to have adverse effects on health and even leads to cancer.
According to the researchers at the University of Florida and Research Triangle Park, smoking has a negative impact on sleep apart from other health problems.
For the study, the researchers examined sleeping issues faced by smokers and non-smokers. In the study participants the result showed 11.9 percent of smokers did not get a good night's sleep, 10.6 percent woke up in the middle of the night and 9.5 percent woke up too early in the morning.
With each cigarette smoked, the sleep time went down by 1.2 minutes among smokers, the researchers noted. They said the finding is important as various other health problems such as depression, diabetes and high blood sugar are tied to poor sleep.
In the U.S. smoking and tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable diseases and deaths. Nearly 40,000 deaths due to tobacco abuse are reported every year in the country. The government spends $97 billion in lost productivity and $96 billion in health care expenditures every year due smoking and tobacco use.
The findings are published in the journal 'Psychology, Health & Medicine.'
