Social Media Safety: Posts About Their Kids Parents Should Avoid

No matter which generation, parents are always fond of showing their kids off to their friends and family members. Doesn't grandma still crack out the family album during family gatherings and reunions?

Today, parents are more tech-savvy: who needs physical photo albums when social media networks like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat exist? However, as parents, you should be aware of the possible dangers of posting on social media. With that in mind, here are a few types of photos of your kids that you should avoid putting up on the internet:

  1. Bath time -- the truth is that there are a lot of dangerous men preying on children online, so any photo of your child that shows them partially or fully naked, like bath time, might put them at risks. You would not want these photos to end up in the hands of kidnappers and child pornographers, right?
  2. Child-shaming -- while some parents seem to think that shaming their children online is okay, these things actually violate parent and child relationships and may cause stress, trauma, depression or anxiety later on in life.
  3. Private details -- details like your kids' full names, addresses or schools, among other things, should be kept private because there might be other people who will use them for less than appropriate purposes.
  4. Sick or injured -- posting photos of your children when they are sick or injured might gain some sympathy from people, but put yourself in your kid's place -- do you like it when others post photos of you when you feel lousy or don't feel your best? Don't take advantage of your child's sickness.
  5. Group shots -- not all parents want photos of their children online. So, in case of group photos, remember to ask permission from other parents before you post photos of their children online. Remember that not everyone is as comfortable with social media as you might be.
