When it comes to food, the mind has an amazing way to think the food can either taste amazing or bland. According to recent studies, one of the aspects that influence the food to taste superb is the utensils being used to consume it.
According to BBC, food served in bowls make the food taste better. It was also mentioned that "sensory stimuli" can greatly affect the person's perception when it comes to both the flavor and the appearance if the meal. An example is food in color red. Red is perceived to make everything taste sweeter compared to other colors.
Huffington Post states that utensils can affect the food's taste and texture as well. Dr. Vanessa Harrar and her team focused on a study which discussed how utensils affect the food.
Harrar said: "Subtly changing eating implements and tableware can affect how pleasurable, or filling, food appears, control eating patterns such as portion size or how much salt is added to food. Alternatively, people may be able to make better food choices if their ingrained color associations are disrupted by less constant advertising and packaging."
Vanessa Packer, the founder of the modelFix exercise studio stated that using a bowl can potentially make the food taste better as it evenly mixes the flavor. She told New York Post that, "Rather than a plate where you're constantly pushing everything to the middle, a bowl brings everything together. You can coat everything in dressing and make a better bite."
According to Charles Spence, a food psychology expert from the University of Oxford, plateware and utensils play a vital role in tricking the mind to affect the taste of food, "I certainly believe that the plateware we use to eat from plays a role in what things tastes like, everything from the texture, the temperature or the feel or the plateware or bowl can fit into this."
Spence then added, "There will be this more general effect that if you're holding a bowl that's warm, you'll perceive other people around you as warmer, you might be willing to pay more as a result."
