20th Century Fox has dropped "Gambit" from its original movie schedule. The studio wasn't explicit about its decision to pull the Channing Tatum superhero movie off, but there are hints "Deadpool 2" might benefit from the changes.
Comic Book Resources reports that "Gambit" was first set for an Oct. 7, 2016 theater run, but then shooting for the film has not started. The "X-men" spinoff is still in the midst of its negotiations with Doug Liman to direct the movie and if an agreement is set with the studio, then "Gambit" will potential start rolling the cameras in New Orleans this March.
However, there could be another delay in the movie with regards setting Tatum's schedule. The actor has two other movie projects to this year aside from "Gambit." He's reprising his role in "23 Jumpstreet" and he's also doing a musical comedy with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Collider reports.
As it is, "Gambit" is lagging behind its schedule, so Fox has done a major shakeup with its movie release dates for the rest of its Marvel comic book spinoffs. Screen Rant rounds this up and cited the new order of the movie releases:
- "X-Men: Apocalypse" - May 27, 2016
- "Wolverine 3" - March 3, 2017
- Untitled Marvel film - October 6, 2017
- Untitled Marvel film - January 12, 2018
- Untitled X-Men film - July 13, 2018
"Deadpool" fandom speculates that one of the "untitled Marvel film" listed in the slots is reserved for "Deadpool 2." The unexpected box office success of the Ryan Reynolds starrer, which debuted in theaters last Feb. 8, might have convinced the studio to rethink their strategy and push "Deadpool's" release ahead, The Mary Sue reports.
The Hollywood Reporter cited that Fox has started putting together the "Deadpool" sequel three weeks after its theater run, and the studio would like to keep its creative team and cast intact.
