Detour Feature for Google Maps Shows 'Pit Stops' During Road Trip

Finally, Google Maps iOS users can plan their stops during long trips thanks to the newest feature of the application. This so-called "pit stop" addition gives users the chance to look for possible stops along the way without closing their navigation tab.

According to Independent, the detour feature could be utilized by clicking the magnifying glass on the upper right side of the screen then choosing the categories you would like to check. It added that after picking the type of place you want to go, the application will show you possible destinations like restaurants, supermarkets or gasoline stations and their ratings.

From there you can already choose a specific location and destination. Google Maps will tag this as an added stop on your trip.

Time explained that this hassle-free feature saves people going on road trips the time, since previously they still had to go out of the navigation mode to find stops. But now, it claimed that is easier to find gas stops and restaurants "while also providing directions and traffic updates."

It was also highlighted that iOS users can even command this feature using voice control. Engadget said using voice search will lessen the hassle of navigating through your phone just to get proper directions.

Aside from these capabilities, the feature also calculates the additional time that one would need if he or she will take a pit stop or two. It was noted in a TechnoBuffalo report that the detour feature was added to Android devices last year.

Now that it has arrived for iPhone owners, this feature is expected to be available in more than 100 countries worldwide. The 3D touch technology is also expected to work well with the Google Maps updated application.

This 3D feature, as per 9to5Mac, can be accessed by "deeply pressing" the Google Maps icon then navigating the application. This touch feature can also be used to search for and mark directions.
