Sam Smith Weight Loss Secrets: Tips From Woman Who Helped Singer Slim Down

Apart from Leonardo DiCaprio's win at the Oscars last Sunday, Sam Smith's weight loss also drew a lot of attention. The singer, who also went home with an Oscar trophy for Best Original Song for the film "Spectre," makes no secret of the fact that he had a complete diet change. It's all due to nutritionist Amelia Freer.

Smith and Freer started working on his weight loss nearly a year ago, which the singer revealed on Instagram. "Amelia Freer has helped me lose over a stone in 2 weeks and has completely transformed my relationship with food," he partly wrote. "Love you Amelia & thank you for making me feel so happy inside and out."

Freer practices the Paleo lifestyle and uses this to guide Smith in having a healthy relationship with food. "It's all very well knowing which foods are healthy and what to avoid, but that information is pretty useless if things like stress, comfort eating or old eating habits ingrained since childhood cause you to make bad choices in the first place," she told Telegraph. She shared that choosing the right foods to eat doesn't have to be a complicated process.

Below are some of her best advice:

1) Say no to snacks. Instead, Amelia recommends having filling and nourishing meals three times a day so you won't have to be tempted to eat in between.

2) Practice mindfulness. Eating should be a slow process, which means you have to chew your food well. "Try to eat gracefully, which means mindfully, slowly and only when you're hungry," she said.

3) Hydrate. It's important to drink water all throughout the day, but the occasional indulgences like tea, coffee and wine are acceptable. However, stay away from sugar-filled drinks.

4) Make your meal times a happy experience. The food should have lots of colors and flavors to be enticing, and if you're the one preparing and cooking these, you should also enjoy the process.

5) Starving yourself is not a healthy diet plan. You shouldn't go cold turkey when trying to cut down on eating. Instead, wean your way to eating healthy and acknowledge that it is okay to stray off the diet plan once in a while, per Marie Claire.
