"Tomb Raider" is about to return to the big screen and will be seen as a modern action film. The upcoming movie will tell the story of the game series but will make Lara Croft's character more realistic.
Roar Uthaug, the Norwegian director of the "The Wave," reveals to IGN that the new "Tomb Raider" film will be related to the 2013 game with the same title from Crystal Dynamics.
"I think making Lara Croft feel like a real human being, that's definitely something we want to bring to the big screen as well," Uthaug said of the "Tomb Raider" reboot.
The 42-year-old filmmaker also aims to create a connection between Croft and the audience by applying some of his "Norwegian sensibilities" to "Tomb Raider." In fact, Uthaug admits that he's a fan of the first "Tomb Raider" film and "strong female characters."
He, too, added that he has showcased female power in almost all of his past movies. Moreover, Uthaug names "Raiders of the Lost Ark" as one of the best action-adventure movies of all time. He also reveals that he intends to pull off something to that effect in the new "Tomb Raider" film, per Screen Rant.
"'Raiders of the Lost Ark' was one of my favorite films growing up, so it's definitely a dream to work in that kind of genre," the director said. He goes on to explain that he wants "Tomb Raider" to be like a "modern action movie" that has a touch of reality.
However, Uthaug clears that unlike "Raiders of the Lost Ark," which is quite far from being realistic, the latest games of "Tomb Raider" are keeping it grounded in reality to show Raiders-like adventure with a "balanced" story.
The "Tomb Raider" reboot is still in the works and no release date has been confirmed. Uthaug promises everyone that the upcoming game-based "Tomb Raider" film will blend his expertise and its original storyline.
