'Spider-Man' Cast & Plot Details: Zendaya Cast In Mysterious Lead Role - Who Is She Playing?

Months before the newest actor playing "Spider-Man" is to debut in his cameo in "Captain America: Civil War" in May, Marvel and Sony announced that Zendaya has been cast in a major role for "Spider-Man." The 19-year-old will play opposite Tom Holland, who was picked to play Peter Parker last year.

Deadline reports that Zendaya will play a character named Michelle in the stand alone "Spider-Man" film. But Michelle is a mysterious role and no one knows if she's romantically linked to Parker. But iO9 hints Michelle could be the comic book character, Michelle Gonzales, who was Peter's roommate in the "Amazing Spider-Man."

Zendaya's acting credentials include starring in her first series, "Shake It Up," on the Disney Channel. She is currently headlining in "Undercover" on the same cable network. "Spider-Man" would be her first major movie and the young star is also a singer.

Washington Post cites that this latest version of "Spider-Man" lacks a Mary Jane character who is an important person in the webbed one's life. Mary Jane was featured in all of the early "Spider-Man" films featuring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield and it's possible Michelle could be an incarnation of Mary Jane in this reboot. But then casting is still in its early stages and some more additions are to be expected in the coming months.

The plot to "Spider-Man" is still being kept under wraps, but the producers have hinted that the lead character will be about 15-years-old, which makes him much younger than previous films. The tone of the movie will also be comparable to a John Hughes coming-of-age flick, per Slash Film. Hughes was the director behind 80s cult films like "The Breakfast Club," "Pretty In Pink" and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off"

The Marvel flick's official title is still unknown, but the movie is expected to be in theaters July 7, 2017.
