3 Things Parents Have To Know About Pacifiers

Babies can get fussy, especially in their younger years. Fortunately for parents, the pacifiers can, well, pacify them. However, despite this very good perk, it seems that not everyone agrees on the benefits of getting one for their little tyke. Here are three things to keep in mind why it's completely okay to make use of these quirky little inventions:

1. Pacifiers may reduce the risk of SIDS

Many mothers are not aware that pacifiers can help reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. "The periodic movement of the baby's mouth while sucking keeps him or her in a lighter state of sleep, so there is less of a chance that he will stop breathing," says Parents advisor Jennifer Shu. "Having a [pacifier] in your baby's mouth helps to keep his airway open."

2. Breastfeeding babies can make use of pacifiers

Pacifiers are great for breastfeeding babies, since a mother's teats alone cannot meet their sucking needs. A study from the Oregon Health & Science University in Portland found that the percentage of babies who exclusively breastfed decreased after pacifiers were dropped from the Mother-Baby unit.

This caused some mothers to opt with a formula to supplement them. As lactation consultant Freda Rosenfeld noted, there is nothing wrong with a newborn using a pacifier as long as the baby is gaining weight and as long as it has been fed.

3. Pacifiers do not cause dental problems.

A child's mouth is malleable enough so that whatever changes a pacifier can cause, can still be corrected. For most, there is no harm in the first two years. However, take note that a child should use the paci less and less as they get older. For instance, children who use the pacifier into toddlerhood can lead to malocclusion, where their teeth don't align properly.

If you are using a pacifier for your child, always remember to take proper care of it. Remember that you need to wash them frequently as they can become a breeding ground for fungi and bacteria.

If you don't want to run it through the dishwasher, at least hand wash it with hot, soapy water daily, especially when they are dropped on the floor. It is also a good idea to replace them regularly.
