Seagate is launching it "fastest-ever" solid-state drive (SSD) that has a transfer rate of 10 gigabyte per second (GB/s). The SSD is expected to be released this summer.
Seagate's upcoming SSD is 4 GB/s faster than the current fastest-industry SSD on the market. It is also compatible with Open Compute Project (OCP) storage specification that is being driven by Facebook. It helps reduce the cost and power burdens which are usual at this level of performance, as reported by Business Wire.
"Your data is only as good as how easily you can access it and put it to use," said Brett Pemble, Seagate's general manager and vice president of SSD Products.
"Seagate is committed to providing the full spectrum of technologies to help meet the diverse needs of organizations so they can unlock this value. Whether for consumer cloud or business applications, this SSD will help improve on demands for fast access to information, where split seconds drive incremental value gains," he added.
The new SSD is compatible with any system that has Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) protocol. NVMe was developed by Seagate together in cooperation with vendors aiming to replace the legacy Serial AT Attachment (SATA) standards and get rid of informational bottlenecks.
The Seagate's 10GB/s SSD will utilize the 16-lane PCIe slots and said that it will announce another SSD that supports eight-lane PCIe slots. The second SSD is made for organizations that need higher performance but uses less power usage requirements and cost, Storage Review reported.
The two new SSD's will be on display at Open Compute Project Summit 2016 which is going to be held in San Jose, California on March 9-10 at Seagate's booth, #C12.
Meanwhile, Seagate currently has 1200.2, in collaboration with Micron; Nytro SSD, Nytro XM1440 M.2 NVMe SSD, Nytro XP6500 Flash Accelerator Card and the Nytro XF1440 2.5".
