According to directors Joe and Anthony Russo, "Captain America: Civil War" took inspiration from non-superhero movies "The Godfather" and "Se7en." In fact, Robert Downey Jr. recently claimed that "Captain America: Civil War" is "The Godfather" of all superhero movies.
It has become a trend to associate superhero movies with non-superhero movies to reach a wide range of audience. In fact, the Russo brothers behind the film "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" have fervently compared the film to the political thriller "Three Days of Candor," reports Den of Geek.
Now, the Russo brothers claim that their recent work on "Captain America: Civil War" is greatly influenced by cult movies such as "The Godfather" and "Se7en." The directors like to view "Civil War" as a psychological thriller with a theme mostly inspired by David Fincher's classic movie "Se7en."
Joe Russo further explains that they like throwing ideas against each other. If they can find something distinctive and can incorporate it into a superhero movie, they usually come up with a theme that is refreshing and different.
"This movie we think of more as a psychological thriller," Anthony Russo said during the interview with Coming Soon. "It's connected to what we're doing in 'Winter Soldier,' but it evolves into a more sensitive, complicated character thriller. Again, I think based upon the fact we're dealing with our protagonists clashing with one another."
Robert Downey Jr. even calls "Captain America's" third installment as "The Godfather" of all superhero movies. As for the reference to "The Godfather," Joe Russo explained that "Civil War" has similarities to the great film in terms of characters. The mob drama movie has a wide set of characters that each tells a perplexing story and has its own arc.
"Captain America: Civil War" with traces of "Se7en" will certainly raise the curiosity level of the audience. The movie hits theaters on May 5. For now, watch the trailer of "Captain America: Civil War" below.
