The famous Tilikum the Killer Whale, who was the primary subject of the documentary "Blackfish," is now facing chronic health issues, deteriorating its health on a day to day basis. A representative from SeaWorld has confirmed the news, noting that Tilikum has become more lethargic as each day passes.
The company handling SeaWorld released a statement saying, "We are saddened to report that over the past few weeks, Tilikum's behavior has become increasingly lethargic." It further stated, "the SeaWorld veterinary and animal care teams are concerned that his health is beginning to deteriorate."
As reported by Yahoo, the orca, which has been at SeaWorld for 23 years, is now being treated for bacterial infection in his lungs. However, according to a recently released statement from the company, "the suspected bacteria is very resistant to treatment and a cure for his illness has not been found."
Amidst the speculation that the dying Tilikum the Killer Whale may not be receiving the best care, the company was quick to debunk it stating that the whale is indeed receiving "the best care available." It also stated that, "like all aging animals, he battles chronic health issues that are taking a greater toll as he ages."
According to SeaWorld, "Since Tilikum became a part of SeaWorld's family 23 years ago, he has received the best in marine mammal health care and life enrichment available for killer whales -- including a focus on his physical health, mental engagement and social activity with other whales."
The Guardian reported that Tilikum the Killer Whale is around 35 years old. This age is considered as "old" when it comes to an orca's average lifespan. There are however studies which showed that some of these orcas live much longer than 35 years. Such lifespan, according to SeaWorld, is somewhat normal for male killer whales, just like Tilikum.
