With the massive success of "The Last of Us" in 2013, it's easy to conclude that the game will be up for a sequel. However, developer Naughty Dog is still keeping mum over where they are with creating "The Last of Us 2." Does the sequel even exist?
Below is a timeline of what's been happening to "The Last of Us 2" developments:
Nolan North Said "The Last Of Us 2" Exists
While attending the Metrocon Anime Convention in Florida last June 2015, North, a leading voice actor in the industry, revealed that the game is in the works.
"I know [Naughty Dog is] doing a 'Last Of Us 2,' but my character in 'Last Of Us' kind of had an untimely demise," he said in a video from the panel.
Neil Druckmann Reacts to North's Statement
Following this, Druckmann, who is the creative director of the game's first installment, revealed that there were beginning to hatch ideas for "Last of Us 2," in magazine interview published in September 2015, per Games Radar. But as far as developments are concerned he and Bruce Straley were still brainstorming for "The Last of Us 2" for new ideas on characters, settings and scenarios last year. However, just as they were about to do begin real work on the game, the developers were tapped to work and finish "Uncharted 4."
"So, I guess he (North) was kind of right in that we were working on stuff, but we don't know what we're doing next and we won't know until probably a few months after we finish Uncharted 4," Druckman further said.
North Backtracks On His Statement
In January 2016, North reveals he actually knows nothing about "The Last of Us 2." When the story blew up that he "confirmed" the game existed last summer, the actor immediately called Naughty Dog to apologize. The developers told him he didn't do any damage and laughed it off.
Where "The Last Of Us 2" Stands Right Now
Unfortunately, Druckmann and Stanley cannot push forward with any development for "The Last of Us" sequel until "Uncharted 4" is released. This game will be expected in stores in May.
