First Uterus Transplant Fails In The US: What Went Wrong With The Procedure?

Cleveland Clinic in Ohio was sad to report on March 9 that the first uterus transplant they performed back in February has failed. Doctors had to remove the uterus from their recipient, Lindsey, because of a complication that they were yet to disclose. She is only identified using her first name in order to protect the identity of her three adopted kids.

In an article published by The Huffington Post, the first ever uterus transplant in the United States that happened a month ago was a failure and doctors were quite frustrated to deliver the news. "We are saddened to share that our patient, Lindsey, recently experienced a sudden complication that led to the removal of her transplanted uterus," Cleveland Clinic told the press.

The facility was still yet to give the details of the cause of the failed procedure, but they said that they will tell the public once they have everything figured out. The patient, Lindsey, 26, was quite disappointed on what happened since she was really hoping to finally have a baby by 2017. She was diagnosed having the UFI condition at 16 - a defect of not having a uterus and she was only able to have a womb from a 30-something donor who died.

Although the uterus was removed from her because of the failed operation, Lindsey didn't get mad or had anything bad to say about doctors in Cleveland Clinic. She was even grateful that they responded quickly, as soon as they saw some complications occurred from the said procedure.

According to CNN, Lindsey is not alone when it comes to suffering from this condition. About 3 to 5% of women have this case from the around the world. The attempt to have a successful uterus transplant was also done in Sweden, where doctors tried the procedure to nine women with all living donors. Unfortunately, seven of those surgeries failed, but two were declared successful.
