Dell Laptops News & Updates: Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition Launched With Linux Operating System

The fifth-generation Skylake-based XPS 13 developer edition with Linux has been launched by Dell in the United States. Dell XPS 13 features a Core i7 processor. It comes with up to 16 GB of memory and runs on Ubuntu Linux, according to PC World. The fifth-generation XPS 13 laptop was announced by Dell last week on its community blog. .

The new XPS 13 developer edition laptop is part of Dell's ongoing "Project Sputnik." Since Dell introduced "Project Sputnik" back in 2012, the current XPS 13 model represents the fifth generation of such laptops.

The laptop comes in three Core i7 configuration options, but a Core i5 model is also on the way. The new XPS 13 models include up to 1TB of storage and 8 GB or 16 GB of memory options. Among the storage options include 25 6GB and 512 GB solid state drive options.

All three XPS 13 models feature a 13-inch touchscreen display that provides resolution of up to 3,200 x 1,800. The laptops come with the operating system Linux Ubuntu 14.04 LTS SP1 pre-installed.

George Barton is Dell's expert, who oversees Project Sputnik. According to his website, for now, the new XPS 13 developer edition lineup is only available in the United States. However, European and Canadian models will be available soon. Barton declares on his website that Ubuntu will ship next month, but Dell cannot provide "a date for when factory installation will become available".

Dell also announced a new line of Linux-based Dell Precision workstation notebooks in addition to the new XPS 13 developer edition. The new Precision 5510, 3510, 7510 and 7710 workstation notebooks come in 15- and 17-inch varieties. According to Barton, all the new Precision product line also come with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and are available for worldwide purchase through Dell's website.

According to Engadget, the current high-end Core i7 models of Dell XPS 13 developer edition start at a price of $1,550.
