Snacking is not only a common past time, it can also be a stress reliever for some. Now new research says the best way to snack, but in a healthier way, is to snack on 30 almonds a day and that will leave you feeling fuller for longer.
According to the findings of new research published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition by researchers from Purdue University in Indiana, people who added 1.5 ounces of almonds to their diet each day reported reduced hunger. 1.50z of almonds is equivalent to 43g or around 30 individual nuts.
"This research suggests that almonds may be a good snack option, especially for those concerned about weight," says Richard Mattes, a professor of nutrition science at Purdue University. "Despite adding 250 calories to the diet, there was no change in total energy intake."
The great news is that even after month of the study participants snacking on 30 almonds a day, they did not gain weight.
"In this study, participants compensated for the additional calories provided by the almonds so daily energy intake did not rise," Mattes said.
"They also reported reduced hunger levels and desire to eat at subsequent meals, particularly when almonds were consumed as a snack [as opposed to during a meal]."
The new study comes on the heels of previous studies which have shown that almonds help increase satiety, both in people of normal weight and those prone to being overweight.
