'Sword Art Online' Movie Details Revealed, New Game Releases This Year

Fans of the phenomenal anime show “Sword Art Online,'”here's great news for you! Details about the upcoming “SAO” movie have been revealed.

The staff working on the movie said during the Dengeki Bunko Haru no Saiten 2016 event that it will be titled “Sword Art Online Ordinal Scale,” reports Anime News Network.

“Ordinal Scale” is reportedly the name of an augmented reality massively multiplayer online role-playing game (ARMMO-RPG) that was specifically made for a new augmented-reality device called “Augma.” According to the official SAO website, the game has also become a phenomenon.

"Following [“Ordinal Scale's”] release, it has become the most discussed game due to its advanced technology," says the website.

The game is titled after both “Sword Art Online” and “Gun Gale Online,” and features a unique “Ranking System.”

“[In] this [Ranking System], each player’s status is determined by their rank which is indicated by an ordinal number instead of a cardinal number,” says the website. “As the result, high ranking players are given overwhelming power and often rank has become a major factor in deciding the outcome of a PvP battle.”

It was also revealed that both Yoshitsugu Matsuoka and Haruka Tomatsu will return to play their roles, Kirito and Asuna, respectively. Yuki Kaijura is also reportedly returning to compose the movie's soundtrack. Original illustration, visuals and character design concepts are drawn by abec.

Reki Kawahara, who wrote the series, is writing a new story for the upcoming movie, while Tomohiko Ito is returning to direct. Character designer Shingo Adachi is also returning.

The movie's all-new story is set after the “Mother Rosario” arc, which was the final arc shown in “SAO” season two.

“Sword Art Online Ordinal Scale” is set for release in 2017.

Aside from the upcoming movie, “SAO” also has a new game coming this year, entitled “Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization,” reports Gematsu.

Bandai Namco announced that the game is set to launch for the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita in Japan this coming fall. They also revealed that characters Leafa and Sinon will be joining, as well as a new character named Premia, played by voice actress Yuiko Tatsumi.
