Video gamers on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 console might be able to play with each other in the future without having to switch devices. Microsoft just announced it's planning to come up with a cross-network support system that will make this possible. The system could also allow for PC gamers and other gadgets to get in on the action.
Xbox's director Chris Charla revealed Microsoft's Cross-Network Play plans, but left it up to game developers to maximize the system. By coming up with games that can make it playable across different devices, Microsoft hopes it will be able to boost Xbox Live subscriptions.
"First, in addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we're enabling developers to support cross-network play as well," said Charla via Xbox Wire. "This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks - including other console and PC networks."
Players are required to have an Xbox Live account to be able to take advantage of the cross-network feature and there's supposedly a game that was developed to test if the system works - "Rocket League." There's still not enough details to this Psyonix game, but it is already listed for release in July for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, Linux and Mac OS platforms.
However, Gamespot reports that the game is open for cross-networking support between PS4 and PC, but during its development phase, Psyonix said it will not feature cross-play support for the Xbox. It should be noted that cross-network play is not a new concept since Sony has made it possible for PS4 players and PC gamers to play across these two platforms for "Street Fighter V," USA Today reports. But as more and more developers are embracing the idea, online gaming could potentially deliver the ultimate gaming experience.
