‘Harry Potter' News: How Wealthy Is JK Rowling From 'HP' Books?

"Harry Potter" books by author J.K. Rowling have been around for almost a decade now. That span of time has reportedly given J.K. Rowling an estimated £7.5 billion from book earnings, merchandise, films and video games based on "Harry Potter."

According to Mirror, J.K. Rowling may see a growth to as much as £17 billion in earnings from "Harry Potter" in just a few years more. The addition of "Harry Potter And The Cursed Child" and "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" may means a hefty fortune for J.K. Rowling.

Time reports that in a move to boost interest in the "Harry Potter" prequel films under "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," J.K. Rowling released a number of short stories on her Pottermore site. J.K. Rowling placed the supporting stories for the new "Harry Potter" films under the umbrella title "The History of Magic in North America."

Despite the controversy now arising over the stories under "The History of Magic in North America" and the inclusion of real-life historical elements, interest from "Harry Potter" fans are still certain.

Mirror points out that the "Harry Potter" eBook sales alone over Pottermore.com earned as much as £70 million for J.K. Rowling in just three years. The media outlet also suggests that "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" may give J.K. Rowling a theater lifespan for the material similar to such theater classics, including "Cats," "Les Miserables" and "The Lion King."

What has helped maintain the success of "Harry Potter" sales is how carefully J.K. Rowling ensured quality in any production and release. "J.K. Rowling has kept tight control of the franchise, so she can ensure everything released is of high quality, which is vitally important," marketing expert Mark Borkowski assessed.

The meteoric rise from having so little to having so much through "Harry Potter" had been a difficult adjustment for J.K. Rowling. Oprah Winfrey was the one person that J.K. Rowling turned to for advice.

"She was someone who didn't grow up rich, then suddenly had money and no one to talk to -- and you don't meet many women in that position," J.K. Rowling shared. Oprah Winfrey asked J.K. Rowling if she has come to terms with the knowledge that she will always have much wealth. J.K. Rowling admitted that she has not yet done so. Oprah Winfrey, on the other hand, told J.K. Rowling that the talk show host knew that she herself will be wealthy for a very long time.

While the £7.5 billion represents an estimated gross of earnings before profits are shared, J.K. Rowling has a current personal net worth of £584 million. Heaps more should soon be coming for the "Harry Potter" creator J.K. Rowling.
