"Scandal" was definitely the big break that Kerry Washington needed. Although she was perfect for the tough yet passionate character she played, the "Django Unchained" star never expected Olivia Pope to teach her about motherhood.
Appearing on the cover of Elle magazine's April 2016 issue, Kerry shared her thoughts on motherhood with regard to herself. One of which was how her portrayal of Olivia Pope made her believe that she could handle the full-time job.
"Even though Olivia Pope has obviously made the decision that she is not a mom," said Kerry Washington, referring to Olivia's decision to get an abortion, as seen in the "Scandal" 2015 midseason finale. Although many would think others wise,
"Because she knows there's always another way - there's always a way to fix it, there's always a way to solve it, to win," Kerry Washington explained. "And I feel like playing her made me feel like, 'All right, I can do it. I will figure out how to juggle it all.'"
This isn't the first time Kerry Washington has opened up about motherhood and Olivia Pope's influence. As part of a Sirius XM Town Hall session in September 2015, Kerry Washington revealed toEntertainment Weekly's Henry Goldblatt that she would probably not have pursued motherhood if it weren't for Olivia Pope.
Apparently, Olivia's "resilient" and can-do attitude helped Kerry Washington believe in herself as a mother. "It really opened me up to the possibility of going outside of my comfort zone in terms of what I thought was possible in a lot of ways," said the "Scandal" actress.
Kerry Washington tied the knot with NFL player Nnamdi Asomugha in 2013. According to Entertainment Tonight, the couple gave birth to their first child, Isabelle Amarachi, a year later in April.
