"Kung Fu Panda 3" easily overtook the top spot on the UK box office, toppling "London Has Fallen," which only lasted a week at No. 1. Meanwhile, "The Divergent Series: Allegiant" took second.
According to the Guardian, DreamWorks Animation's "Kung Fu Panda 3" dominated the UK box office. The film generated £2.18 million from 583 theaters, an additional £1.59 million from previews, totaling £4.77 million.
The Hollywood Reporter notes that although "Kung Fu Panda 3" garnered $6.8 million during its opening weekend, the film's third installment failed surpass the figures from its previous films. "Kung Fu Panda 2" raked in $8.9 million in 2011, while "Kung Fu Panda" took home $8.7 million in its first week in 2008.
DreamWorks Animation's particular release date couldn't have been timed so perfectly. "Kung Fu Panda 3" was released prior to the Easter school holiday, giving families a lot of free time - two weeks, to be specific - to go an see the film in theaters.
However, the fate of "Kung Fu Panda 3" on the UK box office is not sealed just yet. Although the DreamWorks Animation film is expected to garner even more in the next two weeks, "Kung Fu Panda 3" is anticipated to compete with Disney Animation's "Zootopia" ("Zootropolis" in the UK).
On the other hand, "The Divergent Series: Allegiant" remained at the second spot, producing $2.6 million, a figure much lower than "Insurgent," which pulled in $4.2 million.
Further down the list is Sacha Baron Cohen's "The Grimsby Brothers," which garnered less than half a million this week. Its total has only come up to $6.2 million, which THR reports could possibly be "the comic's worst performing title for one of his own creations."
"Kung Fu Panda 3" stars the film's original cast: Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, Seth Rogen, David Cross and James Hong. New additions include Bryan Cranston, Kate Hudson and J.K. Simmons.
