Apple is already crafting away new iPhones for 2014 and the latest reports claim the new handsets to be launched next year will feature larger screens with curved glass and enhanced sensors that can sense different levels of pressure.
Two new iPhone models are in the works, sporting curved displays as big as 5.5 inches, Bloomberg reports. Sensors that can distinguish heavy or light touches on the screen may be incorporated into subsequent models, the person said.
These new iPhones for 2014 would come in 4.7 and 5.5-inch flavors, according to the report. A Japanese Apple iOS rumor website claimed a September launch for a large-screen iPhone late in October, however, and two reliable analyst sources predict a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 bound for stores in late 2014.
"Screen size is one of the things where Apple has to catch up to the Android camp," Dennis Chan, an analyst at Yuanta Financial Holding Co. in Taipei, said, referring to phones using Google Inc.'s operating software. "Innovation in components has been a key for Apple since the first iPhone came out."
Earlier in September, Apple launched two new smartphones in its iPhone lineup: the low-cost 5c and the 5s featuring upgrades in processing speed as well as a fingerprint sensor. The company says more than 9 million iPhones were sold during the devices' opening weekend.
The Cupertino-based company has been receiving increased completion from other smartphone manufacturers who are rolling out larger screens, such as Samsung and Google. More companies are also experimenting with curved screens. Last month, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Round with 5.7-inch curved display.
