Several video games are currently in development to launch as movies. “Mortal Kombat” will have a reboot film while other popular titles already have official release dates. Here are six titles that are being adapted.
1. "Mortal Kombat"
Den of Geek wrote that the first video-game-to-film adaptation of "Mortal Kombat" was launched in 1995, with a sequel releasing in 1997. In 2010, “Mortal Kombat: Rebirth” by director Kevin Tancharoen was featured. In 2011, Warner Bros hired Tancharoen to work on the upcoming "Mortal Kombat" reboot, which will have a budget of around $40 to $50 million. The potential "Mortal Kombat" cast is yet to be announced, but fans are hoping that Channing Tatum and Ronda Rousey would appear, among others.
2. "Angry Birds"
"Angry Birds," the largest mobile app in the world, is currently being made into a film to be released on May 20, 2016, per the "Angry Birds" website. The upcoming movie will be a 3D CG-animated feature produced by David Maisel, former CEO of Marvel Studios and currently Senior Advisor of Rovio. It will also be the directorial debut of Clay Kaytis, animator of “Frozen” and “Tangled,” among others. Fergal Reilly is serving as co-director.
3. "Assassin’s Creed"
Michael Fassbender will star as Callum Lynch, a man who realizes that he has an assassin ancestor. He will have to go through the memories of his ancestor to take down a huge threat at present. Marion Cotillard will also co-star in "Assasin's Creed" although her role is still unknown. "Assasin's Creed" is a collaborative effort between Ubisoft, 20th Century Fox, New Regency and others, with Justin Kurzel serving as director, according to its official website. The movie's officially release is on Dec. 21, 2016. Furthermore, “Assassin’s Creed 2” is already in development with Fassbender reprising his role.
4. "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter"
The sixth film in the horror film franchise will launch on Jan. 27, 2017, according to its Facebook page. "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter" will feature the return of Milla Jovovich, who will play Alice for the final time. She will also work with Shawn Roberts, playing the villainous Albert Wesker, to battle the undead. The first “Resident Evil” movie launched in 2002.
5. "Warcraft"
"Warcraft," the popular strategy game by Blizzard, will be converted into a movie, releasing on June 10, 2016, writes its Twitter account. The plot of the "Warcraft" movie will focus on the war between orcs and humans. Travis Fimmel will play Sir AnduinLothar, head of the human Alliance, while Toby Kebbell will play Durotan, leader of the orcish Horde.
6. "The Witcher"
Tomasz Baginski will direct "The Witcher" movie while Thania St. John will serve as writer. The movie is scheduled to launch in 2017, writes SlashFilm. More updates and details on the films are expected soon.
