Earlier in March 2016, Microsoft announced that it intends to let Xbox gamers play against PlayStation4 and PC gamers. Microsoft is inviting developers to determine if they would like to support cross-network gaming. Sony will also have to support Microsoft’s plans via its PlayStation Network.
Microsoft said that aside from natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, they are allowing developers to support cross-network play too. The approach will let Xbox 10 and Windows 10 players to play with others on various online multiplayer networks, including other PC networks and consoles.
Sony recently answered Microsoft’s invitation. The tech company hinted that it would potentially support cross-network play in the future, writes The Verge.
“PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002. We would be happy to save the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play,” Sony told Game Spot.
Sony’s answer does not directly state whether it will collaborate with Microsoft and developers to allow cross-network play between Xbox One and PlayStation 4, although the company will apparently be open to developers who would like to try the approach. The fact that Sony responded to Microsoft’s invitation is a good sign that players of both consoles may finally get to meet sometime soon.
At the moment, it is still early to determine the number of developers, who will support the new cross-network play by Microsoft. One of the initial titles that will appear in the new gaming approach is “Rocket League,” although more are expected to be announced at E3 in June 2016.
According to Sony, it has cross-platform play support between PlayStation and PC since 2002. It may finally be time for the company to open the opportunity by working with its rival. If the project proceeds, Xbox One players may get to play PlayStation exclusive titles and vice-versa.
More updates and details on the cross-network play approach between Sony and Microsoft are expected soon. Gamers have already started stating their interest in the potential collaboration.
