Angelcare Monitors Issues Recall of 600,000 Monitors Following Strangulation of 2 Babies

Quebec-based company Angelcare Monitors Inc is recalling 600,000 baby monitors after an accident involving the products sensor pad cord which strangled two infants, according to reports on Thursday.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said on Thursday the cord attached to the baby monitor's sensor pad is placed under the crib mattress, poses a strangulation risk if the child pulls the cord into the crib and it becomes wrapped around the neck.

Two infants have died from cord strangulation deaths with this product and two more have reportedly been entangled, but did not die as a result of the accident, according to Reuters.

According to the CPSC, these Angelcare Monitors were sold at a number of retailers from 1999 to September 2013 for about $100 to $300.

The product was sold at, but not limited, to the following stores; Babies R Us, Toys R Us, Burlington Coat Factory, Meijer, Sears, Walmart, Amazon.com, Target.com, Overstock.com and nearly 70 small baby specialty stores

According to the report, two children died from accidental strangulation. One child was reported strangled in 2004 in Salem, Oregon, and a second died in San Diego in 2011.

Angelcare Monitors Inc said the voluntary recall involves all versions of Angelcare sensor monitors including model numbers: AC1100, AC201, AC300, AC401 AC601 and 49255 that did not include rigid cord covers. The model number is located on the back of the nursery monitor unit.
