Childhood Milestones: Red Flags To Watch For 4 Months To 3 Three Years Old Infants

The medical director of Duke Health Center at Southpoint, pediatrician Michelle Bailey, MD, said it is ideal for parents to monitor the childhood milestones of their kids. According to the doctor, some of the obvious developmental signs will eventually emerge during the first months of a baby's life.

While each child needs to do a particular task by a certain age, Bailey said, parents, however, should not compare their babies' milestones with other kids. "Remember that each child is an individual," Bailey explained to WebMd. "There's a wide range for when children achieve a particular milestone."

Nevertheless, parents still need to be wary of their child's development. They should track their baby's milestones and should visit a pediatrician if they notice any of the following signs:

When your child turns four months, consider bringing him to a specialist if he doesn't respond to loud noises or if your child crosses his eyes most of the time. In addition, if your child doesn't interact with other people like mimicking sounds and doesn't smile. Also, if your child doesn't grasp objects or doesn't put objects to his mouth.

0-7 Months

At seven months, if you noticed that your child has stiff movements and is having difficulty placing objects in his mouth, then better discuss it with your pediatrician. Even more so if your child is having trouble rolling over on either directions and can't sit without the help of others.

1 Year Old

Other concerns are if your child can't stand by himself and can't say a single word by the age of one. Likewise, if your child doesn't point to all the objects he sees and doesn't show any gesture like shaking head when saying "no."

2 Years Old

According to Parents, parents should also consult their pediatrician if their kids turn two but still can't speak at least 15 words. This is especially essential if the child doesn't imitate actions or words he hears. If the child doesn't follow simple instructions or is having trouble moving wheeled toys, it's time to bring him to the doctor.

3 Years Old

When the child turns three, parents should also need to look for the following signs: the child has difficulty climbing stairs, speaks unclearly and drools persistently. Also, makes poor eye contact and doesn't engage in fun activities.

There are several childhood milestones to watch for, but if you notice any of the said signs, then visit your pediatrician right away. That way, you and your pediatrician can find a way to discuss the possible intervention evaluation.
