'Pretty Woman' Originally A Thriller? ‘Batman V Superman’ Star Diane Lane Reveals First Plot & Title Of Julia Roberts Film

"Pretty Woman," which starred Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, was revealed by "Batman V Superman" actress Diane Lane to be originally nothing close to a romantic comedy. In fact, "Pretty Woman" was not its original title. Neither was "Pretty Woman" supposed to have a happy ending.

According to New York Daily News, "Batman V Superman" actress Diane Lane was among the many hopefuls whom Julia Roberts beat out for "Pretty Woman." However, according to the Diane Lane, "Pretty Woman" was called by a different name at the time that she auditioned.

"Pretty Woman" as Julia Roberts popularized, was a fairy tale story about a call girl who found true love in a very rich client, Richard Gere. By the end of their weekend together in "Pretty Woman," Richard Gere was wooing Julia Roberts with flowers from the open roof of his white limousine.

Origially, though, "Pretty Woman" was supposed to be a suspense thriller about a delusional, psychotic call girl. At the end of "Pretty Woman," the call girl is supposed to get kicked out of a running limousine. Diane Lane related that "Pretty Woman" was also supposed to be called "3000," which referred to the call girl's fee for that weekend.

Today reports that Diane Lane related how "Pretty Woman" or "3000" was a popular target among the young actresses at that time. "It seemed to me that every girl in Hollywood was crawling around in her underwear at that point in time -- our best lingerie, let's be clear -- to get this film," Diane Lane said. "Because at that time, it was a story about this psychotic call girl who had a delusion of grandeur."

The "Pretty Woman" role eventually went to the relatively unknown Julia Roberts. Both "Pretty Woman" and Julia Roberts became instant hits under the revised plot, script and title. The "Pretty Woman" may not have gone to Diane Lane, but fans can catch her in the summer offering "Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice."
