Adam Johnson, a former England soccer star has been sentenced for a 6-year imprisonment after he was found guilty of three child sex charges. And with all the fines he has to pay, will Adam Johnson end up flat broke?
Adam Johnson's 6-year imprisonment came after the 28-year-old footballer was found guilty of sexual activity with a 15-year-old fan as well as for grooming the teenager. According to ESPN FC, Adam Johnson admitted that he kissed the girl in his car in County Durham on Jan. 30.
In addition, Adam Johnson also admitted that he groomed the girl with hundreds of social media messages. At the time of the incident, Johnson told the authorities that he was unaware of the girl's real age and claimed that he only kissed her.
The victim, however, told the court that Adam Johnson put his hands down her pants and that she performed an oral sex act on him. Unfortunately, the oral sex wasn't proved and Johnson was cleared.
Adam Johnson pleaded guilty to one charge of sexual activity with a child and one charge of grooming. But the court found him guilty of another charge of sexual activity.
"You made a deliberate decision to engage in sexual activity with this young girl, no doubt in the expectation that you would get away with it," sentencing judge Jonathan Rose told Adam Johnson, as per CNN. "The offenses happened at a time when you were engaged in frequent sexual intercourse with multiple partners."
During the sentencing, Adam Johnson appeared without the support of former partner and the mom of his 1-year-old daughter, Stacey Flounders. Johnson's sister, Faye, was also absent but she has explained on Facebook that she would not attend the hearing because she did not want her brother "to see the pain" in her eyes, Fox Sports reports.
Meanwhile, aside from 6-year imprisonment, Adam Johnson was also ordered to pay $70,000 (£50,000) of the prosecution's cost that has an accumulated amount of $94,709 (£67,132). And despite of his reported £9 million net worth, the fines could cause a major dent to his fortune.
Another jab to Adam Johnson's wealth was the termination of his sponsorship deal from sportswear firm Adidas following his guilty plea. Sunderland, which had initially declined to comment on the case, had also chose to sack the midfielder last month.
Adam Johnson's case also attracted controversy. In fact, he was accused of delaying his pleas in order to lengthen his playing career and how much Sunderland knew about his fault, which led to the resignation of the club's chief executive, Margaret Byrne, Daily Mail notes.
So, do you think Adam Johnson's 6-year imprisonment will leave him flat broke?
