'Pokken Tournament' Release Leads To 151% Increase In Japan Wii U Sales

Wii U hardware sales in Japan saw an increase of more than 150 percent last week, thanks to the newly-released “Pokken Tournament” fighting game.

Although “Pokken Tournament” has been present in Japanese arcades since last summer, the recent release for the Wii U still reached high numbers, making the Wii U-exclusive the top-selling game in Japan for the past week, reports Attack of The Fanboy.

Data released by Famitsu revealed that “Pokken Tournament” was able to give the Wii U a much needed boost in hardware sales. During its first week of release in Japan, “Pokken Tournament” sold 72,502 units, landing it in the top spot for game sales and overtaking other titles. These titles include Tom Clancy's “The Division,” “The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD” and “Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition.”

“Pokken Tournament" also caused a 151 percent jump in the sales of Wii U systems, from 3,836 to 9,644 this week, reports Game Spot. This helped Nintendo land its console in fourth place, following the PlayStation 4 that sold 27,354 units; the PS Vita that sold 19,474 units; and the New Nintendo 3DS LL that sold 14,734 units.

“Pokken Tournament” is not the only newcomer in the sales charts this week, notes MCV. While the “Pokemon” fighting game debuted at top spot, the second spot was occupied by a new title, “Digimon World: Next Order,” which sold 52,521 units. Another new title, “Senran Kagura: Estival Versus Sakura Edition,” also came in eighth place with 8,572 units sold.

Last week's number one seller, “The Division,” fell down to third place, selling only 26,208 units – a 69 percent decrease in sales from the past week. Sales of other “Pokemon” titles dubbed as “Pocket Monster Red/Green/Blue/Yellow” also fetched 9,323 units, giving it the sixth spot.
