Some moms turn to homemade infant formula when they experience difficulties in breastfeeding their kids. However, experts warned mothers that homemade milk may pose dangers to infants.
Fox News reported that some mothers like Morgan Verdery have created their own homemade baby formula to be able to feed their kids properly. Using a combination of goat milk powder, organic coconut oil, molasses, water and infant vitamins, these moms are able to create substitutes for milk.
However, experts claim that lack of nourishment among children can result because of these practices. "Mother's milk is extremely rich in cholesterol One of the key problems with conventional formula is that it has low or no cholesterol because they use powdered nonfat milk," said Weston A. Price Foundation president Sally Fallon-Morell.
She explained that commercial baby formula lacks necessary sugars which are needed by the baby for its growth and development. "The ingredients are wrong, inappropriate and they put a great stress on the baby's immune system and the baby's digestion system," Fallon-Morell added.
On the other hand, Parents.com highlighted that some of the ingredients used for homemade and commercial milk formulas are not safe and may contain harmful bacteria. It noted that goat milk, skim milk and full-fat milk may not provide the nutritional needs of infants.
Dr. Jatinder Bhatia of the Children's Hospital of Georgia told Parents.com that there is also an increased risk of infection when kids drink milk which could be contaminated. "The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and other organizations have strict instructions about preparation, handling, and storage of commercial formulas to reduce the risk of contamination," Dr. Bhatia added.
The doctor said that the AAP does not recommend any homemade formula for babies. Health experts fear that the cooking process would expose it to more contamination.
