State education officials are already in plans of revising the existing math and English standards. The reason is that they want to improve and build on the existing standards.
The Ohio Department of Education is trying to involve the ideas and suggestions coming from parents and educators by answering and writing comments in an online survey regarding the standard revision.
The current standards used are the ones adopted 5 years ago as the state moved to Common Core. According to WLWT5, this will be the very first move of revising the standards since 2010.
Remembering the Common Core State Standards controversy, a lot of supporters of this proposed standards have been faltering. As reportedly said in other news, there was a lack of American agreement on when to teach specific topics to a certain grade or level. The Common Core State Standards are said not to be enough comparing to top-performing countries around the world.
According to The Blade news, Jim Wright, director of the ODE's Office of Curriculum and Assessment, said, "We're trying to stay away from the Common Core controversy because what we are talking about here is concrete changes to the standards."
The education officials are aiming to give parents the chance to be involved in this process by getting their concerns and suggestions heard. All they wanted is for the parents to know what their children are learning and doing.
The revision of the standards will specify the topics that should be learned by students in every grade or level. The revised standards can be seen in an online site education.ohio.gov. People who will visit the page can leave comments and suggestions up until April 5, 2016.
There will be an advisory committee who will be assigned to review the online comments left and if there are any revisions of the standards, it will be posted January next year.
